Solar powered camera for monitoring insects (vespa velutina)
Velutina Monitor is a modular and selective camera based trap for monitoring the presence of Vespa Velutina and Vespa Crabro.
The station continuosly captures and classifies 10 images per second allowing to accurately detect the arrival and departure of Vespa Velutina and Vespa Crabro. The models accuracy is over 90% for both classes.

Mechanism for selectively trapping live vespa velutina for telemetry and selective poisoning applications.
On-device image analysis allows to react to the presence of the velutina in real-time and enable selective capturing or feeding applications.
The modular design allows to use different types of baits aswell as mount actuators for catching or selective feeding applications.

About Me

My name is Nicola Storni, I have Master's Degree in Electrical Engineering and work in the field of Computer Vision at ETH Zürich. This private project was born out of the passion for edge computing and my part-time beekeeping activity which made me aware of the problem of Vespa Velutina.
